It took more than a few years but Emily eventually determined that she had enough with her husband’s abusive and unhealthy drinking. She was worn-out from seeing Barry come home early in the morning from drinking rather than spending time with her and the kids. She was also fed up from the second DWI Barry recently received. Furthermore she was drained from generating explanations for her spouse when he couldn’t make it to the office due to his problems with drinking. Not only this but she was anxious about the fact that their relationship was deteriorating due to Barry’s harmful drinking. And lastly she was tired of the risky financial dilemma into which he had placed his family because of his excessive and unhealthy drinking behavior.
When Abusive and Excessive Drinking Motivates a Person to do Something Helpful About a Person’s Drinking Problem
One Tuesday morning when Emily was thinking about what she could do about her husband’s abusive and hazardous drinking, she got to the point that she simply had to do something to cut into the negative cycle of Barry’s abusive and careless drinking behavior.
So she looked in the yellow pages under “alcohol rehabilitation” and located scores of rehabilitation clinics that were all located less than 30 miles away from where her husband and she lived.
Since she didn’t know much about these rehab facilities, she decided to call some of them and ask some questions. When she called each rehabilitation center she introduced herself and said that her husband was exhibiting excessive and hazardous drinking behavior. She also articulated that Barry, her spouse, had a top quality health insurance program at work and that outpatient or residential alcohol dependency rehabilitation would be covered if a physician in the company health plan prescribed the rehabilitation.
At one rehabilitation center, Emily was stunned that she was able to converse directly with a counselor who suggested that she come to the office to describe her husband’s harmful drinking behavior in much greater detail.

When Emily arrived at the rehabilitation clinic, she filled out some required paperwork and then almost immediately got to see a psychologist.
After listening to Emily describe her husband’s abusive and unhealthy drinking, the therapist in a helpful but resolute manner told Emily how she probably adding to her spouse’s careless and hazardous drinking through the months and the years by justifying his behavior instead of letting him suffer the consequences of his careless and excessive drinking behavior.
Emily Learns That She Has Been Enabling Her Husband’s Irresponsible and Excessive Drinking
Stated somewhat more forcefully, the physician told Emily that she may have been inadvertently enabling Barry’s excessive and careless drinking behavior. The counselor also underscored the fact that even though Emily could not control her husband’s conduct, with the guidance and support of the treatment team at the rehab center she would not only be able to learn how to stop contributing to Barry’s abusive and careless drinking but she would also be able to learn how to encourage him to make an appointment at the rehab facility so that he could discuss his abusive and unhealthy drinking behavior with a doctor.
Fortunately after Emily discussed this with Barry, and he saw that she was not joking, Barry told her that he had been very worried about his careless drinking behavior and that he was somewhat pleased to learn that Emily wanted to do something positive about his excessive and unhealthy drinking behavior. As a result, he scheduled an appointment to see a doctor at the local alcohol rehab center.
Barry Agrees to Meet With a Counselor About His Abusive and Excessive Drinking
While simply calling a treatment facility does not guarantee that a person’s hazardous and careless drinking behavior will stop or that one’s warning signs of alcoholism or the alcohol abuse signs one displays will simply fade away, calling for an appointment is evidently a vital step in the rehabilitation process. And due to the fact that Barry was serious about getting quality help for his hazardous and careless drinking, the probability for a successful recovery was considerably increased.
